MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) undergraduate admission process is holistic, focusing on academic excellence, personal character, and a demonstrated “match to mission” (innovation, collaboration, and risk-taking). Applicants must use the MIT application portal (not Common App) to submit essays, transcripts, two letters of recommendation (one STEM, one humanities), and mandatory SAT/ACT scores. Deadlines are Nov 1 (Early Action) and Jan 5 (Regular Action).
Key Admission Requirements & Components
• Application System: Applicants must use the proprietary MIT Admissions portal.
• Deadlines:
• Early Action (Non-binding): November 1.
• Regular Action: January 5.
• Standardized Tests: The SAT or ACT is required. It is highly recommended to aim for the 75th percentile (e.g., 1570+ SAT, 36 ACT).
• Letters of Recommendation: Two are required: one from a math/science teacher and one from a humanities/social science teacher.
• Essays & Short Answers: Applicants must answer several short prompts that highlight personality, creativity, and interest in STEM.
• Interview (Optional but Recommended): Conducted by Educational Counselors (ECs) if available. If an interview is not offered, it does not negatively impact the application.
• Extracurriculars: MIT looks for passion and depth, such as research, Olympiads, or, significant, hands-on projects.
• English Proficiency: Recommended for non-native English speakers.

Selection Process and Evaluation
• Holistic Review: Every application is read by a senior officer and evaluated in context.
• Key Traits: MIT seeks students who are, and who want to, “make a better world.” They look for risk-takers, innovators, and those who learn from failure.
• Academic Preparation: Applicants should take the most rigorous math and science courses available, typically including calculus and physics.
• Class of 12th Grade: While no minimum GPA is set, successful applicants usually have excellent academic records.

Note: For international students, particularly from India, high performance in national/international Olympiads (physics, math, informatics, chemistry) significantly strengthens the application.
